In the year 1996 in the village of Kolomwe in central Zambia there was a young boy called Waina. One day he met the local sangoma, who had a prophecy where Waina had a major part to revamp the legacy of Zamrock in a different time and era. The witch doctor said that you will meet three rockers from the land of a thousand of lakes and together you will make history. The young and naive Waina didn`t believe a word, until years later the prophecy came true and ZANGOMA was born.
ZANGOMA hails from Tampere, Finland and comprises of the Zambian vocalist Waina Kolomwe, singer/guitarist Ville Salonen, singer/bassist Riku Pirttiniemi (Death Hawks, Dust Mountain), and drummer Miikka Heikkinen (Death Hawks). They play Zamrock, a genre that gained popularity in Zambia during the ’70s. It’s a fusion of traditional African music and psychedelic-, garage-, and hard rock with some funk and blues in the mix as well. Bands like Black Sabbath, Funkadelic, The Rolling Stones, Blue Cheer, Cream and Deep Purple had a major part in shaping the music.
