A glorification of the insecurities and daydreams of youth, Finland’s Ghost World prepares for the release of their debut album on Svart Records on March 17th. The slacker quartet draws heavily from the global guitar indie music scene of the 90’s, with names such as Dinosaur Jr and Sebadoh being the band’s personal idols of worship. Yet, the band’s raw and emotional tone and their soulful approach proves they are much more than a mere time capsule from a time the band members themselves are too young to remember.
The eponymous debut album consists of a wide variety of material, some of the songs dating back to the band’s early steps in 2014, others being finished in the studio. The band aimed for a big, dynamic sound which would avoid unnecessarry sophistication so that the roughness at the heart of the music can shine through unobstructed. Ghost World have a big heart, which besides the roughness also has plenty of room for beautiful pop melodies and warmly schreeching guitars.
Ghost World are the kind of band any music aficionado cannot afford to miss. Just like the experience of being alive, they are at times awkward and out of place but furious, engaging and heartbreakingly great the next. This is music to grow your hair to while you dream away.
